A statement by Shawn Connor
It is my desire, as the creator of utilitarian objects, using experimental forms and textures, to engage the viewer on multiple levels of interest. The inspiration of my designs and my work come from familiar yet overlooked objects such as storm drains, horse ploughs, and even plants and animals such as the arched stance of a dog or the languid flow of a pepper leaf. The basis of my work, when creating these predominantly stationary pieces, is to maintain the feeling of flow or movement that comes from the inspiring object. Initially, I wish for the viewer to be intrigued by the form. Then, upon closer inspection, the practical function is realized.
My most recent work has taken on a more industrial feel with exposed laminate edges and wider paneled forms. The key is to deal with issues from my previous work while simultaneously pushing myself toward more production based and marketable pieces to gain further exposure while maintaining an intimate connection on both an emotional and intellectual level.
